Interested in Joining? The Illinois High School Rodeo Association begins a new year of competition every August. All Illinois High School Rodeo Association members must pay dues in July to begin the new rodeo year. Contestants can expect to compete in at least 6 and as many as 12 weekend rodeos per year. Each weekend usually involves 2 complete rodeos. The top 10 contestants, in each event, at each rodeo, earn points. Dependent on the number of entries in each event, contestants also earn jackpot payout. The top 15 point earners in each event, each year, compete in the State Finals Rodeo, usually held in June. From the State Finals, the top 4 in each event qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo, typically held in July.
To join, download all 4 membership forms and the general release from the FORMS page of the website 2009-2010 NHSRA Membership Form, NHSRA page 2, IHSRA Membership Forms (page 1 and page 2). Also, download and sign the general release form. Be sure to fill in the forms completely and have both Illinois and the NHSRA forms notarized. Both parent signatures are required. Parents who have full custody must note this on both notarized forms. Send the complete and notarized forms and membership fees to the state secretary, address is on the form. First time members must include a copy of their birth certificate and last available school report card. The term of membership is 1 year, beginning after the National High School Finals Rodeo in July each year. New members will not be allowed to compete until all documentation is complete. Dear Parents, Welcome to the Illinois High school Rodeo Association. You have committed with your son or daughter to embark on a journey that will last, in most cases, only 4 very short years. For some it may be only 1 or 2 or 3 years. For others, you may be a part of this association for many years as your other children grow. You and your child will make friends from all over the state of Illinois. The Association changes as each year we graduate seniors and welcome freshman and new members. Over the years, as membership changes, some things remain the same. The IHSRA is dedicated to the mission of the National High School Rodeo Association, which is to promote the sport of rodeo and the highest type of conduct and sportsmanship and expose its positive image to the general public, to preserve the Western Heritage, offer a privilege of family bonding; offer an opportunity of continuing education and maintain the highest regard for livestock. Each year, your child will receive a new copy of the NHSRA Rules, By-laws, and constitution. You and your child are expected to read and follow the rules of the NHSRA. Additional ground rules at each rodeo are communicated by the judges and arena directors as well as the Student officers at the contestant meeting held each rodeo. It is the responsibility of each contestant to attend the meeting or seek out a responsible representative to share information from the meeting with him or her. New members will receive a copy of the IHSRA By-laws when they join the association. These are guidelines specific to Illinois, and do not supersede the NHSRA Rules and by-laws. All students are required to maintain passing grades in 4 subjects in school, or if taking less than 4 classes, must be passing in all subjects. Contestants are required to provide a copy of each report card for each grading period throughout the year to the rodeo secretary by the deadlines established and published in the IHSRA newsletter or the schedule posted on www. ihsra.org. If the report card is not received by the deadline, the contestant will not be eligible to enter the next scheduled rodeo, or subsequent rodeos until the report card is received . Rodeo entry forms must also be signed between grading periods by the Principal, Superintendent or designee, indicating the contestant meets the NHSRA grade and conduct requirements. This is required by the National High School Rodeo Association. The membership fees of $177.00 to join the IHSRA include the NHSRA dues, the NHSRA Times (the monthly publication of the NHSRA), secondary insurance coverage for contestants and Illinois dues. In addition, fundraisers are held by the State and districts. The IHSRA requires each contestant to contribute $300.00 per year in fundraising, in the form of raffle ticket sales. Raffles in the past have been for a horse trailer, and most recently, a John Deere Gator or $5000. Income from this fundraiser goes back to the contestants in the form of awards and scholarships. The student body votes on the fundraiser for the coming year at the annual Mid-winter meeting. The time frame for turning in money for tickets is published in the newsletter as well as on www.ihsra.org. Contestants who have not turned in raffle money by the deadlines will not be eligible to enter rodeos until they have turned in raffle money. Membership for subsequent years will not be accepted until indebtedness from the previous rodeo year has been settled. Rodeos are held on weekends and usually involve 2 complete rodeos. Entry fees are currently $20.00 per event, per rodeo. From each entry, $15.00 goes to the IHSRA and the district organizing the rodeo, and $5.00 is returned to the contestants in the form of jackpot winnings at each rodeo. Entry fees are subject to change as the cost producing rodeos changes. Entry fees have been stable for the past 3 years. Entry forms are mailed to the contestants approximately 1 month before each scheduled rodeo, and must be mailed back to the Rodeo Secretary with the appropriate fees, postmarked as indicated on each entry form. Both parents are required to sign each entry form and place their initials on the line next to each event they are permitting their child to enter. One signature is acceptable only in cases where one parent is deceased or has full court ordered custody, and must be indicated on the form. Other expenses associated with participating in rodeos are parent passes, stalls, camping/ electric hook-up for trailers. Parent passes are required to be purchased at all rodeos and cost $10.00 per parent per weekend. At State sponsored rodeos, the income from parent passes goes to the State, at District rodeos the money goes to the District sponsoring the rodeo and, whether State or District, is used for the expense of putting on the rodeo. Parents /contestants are encouraged to write separate checks entry fees and parent passes. Some venues require all contestants to pay to stall their horses. At other venues, stalls may not be available and horses may be tied to trailers for the weekend. The same is true of electric hook-ups, and is dependant on the rodeo venue. Some venues do not have electric hook-ups and generators may be needed. Carefully read and follow instructions on the information sheet provided with each rodeo entry for details regarding passes, camping and stalls.
